Football England Premiership – Match Calendar – sep / 2011

Apparent Russian powerhouse Anzhi Makhachkala are once again looking to add some high-profile stars to their squad, this time going after Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic. After signing Samuel Eto'o for a staggering figure, the Russian side have some how mustered €28.2 million to launch an assault on the world class centre back. With less than 24 hours left in the transfer window, will it be bye bye Vidic? According to Goal.com, Russian businessman Suleyman Kerimou is looking to bring about imminent success at the club, not just settling for the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Balazs Dzsudzsak and Yuri Zhirkov, all brought in just this window. With Vidic proving to be one of United's better players, the Red Devils would be obviously reluctant to let him go. However with a €28.2 million offer on the cards, Vidic and United, like Eto'o and Inter, may just be tempted by the money on offer. Manchester have started the 2011/2012 installment of the English Premier League in emphatic fashion, only recently disposing of Arsenal 8-2. With the younger players of United looking to be more than capable of filling the shoes of more senior players, perhaps Vidic and Ferguson will choose to part ways. With money on their side, do not be surprised to see Anzhi Makhachkala up the anti as the deadline draws near in their attempt to secure the services of Manchester United's inspirational captain. The draw has been made for the third round of the League Cup and the round sees Manchester City face off against Championship side, and current Cup holders Birmingham City.   Since their relegation from the Premiership the Midlands club has struggled. So far they have only managed four points from the first four games and I think possibly their League Cup win last season, qualifying them for European Football, may have shifted the players focus away from the League. In addition to this, Birmingham have also lost the manager that masterminded that League Cup win left for rivals Aston Villa and instead Chris Houghton. Also, off the field Birmingham have had concerns with their Chairman, after Carson Yeung was arrested at his home in Hong Kong in connection with alleged money laundering.   Make no mistake though, Birmingham can still cause City problems if the Premier League side isn’t focused fully. In fact the Cup history between these two teams is quite interesting. The last time these two teams met in the League Cup, Manchester City ran out comfortable winners 6-0 with four goals from Huckerby, one from Goater and Luntala with a goal. That was a round four game and despite the convincing win City couldn’t progress further, getting eliminated by Blackburn in the very next round. There was another 6-0 result in the League Cup on December 1962, this time it was a round five game and the result was in favor of the Midlands team.  In other Cup competitions, how City got on against Birmingham is totally dependant on where the game takes place. Games that took place in the FA Cup in 1927, 1929, 1947 and 1951 between these two teams all resulted in Birmingham wins and only two City goals. All four were played in Birmingham. However, the meetings in 1913, 1956 and 2001 were all Manchester City wins, two were played in Manchester and obviously the 1956 was the 3-1 FA Cup Final win.  Birmingham have won the League Cup just as many times as their Manchester rivals. The most recent win came last season against Arsenal, and the previous one was a two legged affair against Aston Villa in which Brum beat out their neighbors 3-1. Like Manchester City, Birmingham have also appeared and lost in a third Final. That was against Liverpool and was lost on penalties.  Onto Manchester City, everything with City and their participation in the Finals has happened in the 1970’s. The first win was achieved after extra time against another Midlands club, West Brom. Doyle and Pardoe were the goal scorers on that day to secure the win. Then 1976 saw, up until recently, City lift their last trophy. Again, it was a 2-1 win with Barnes and Tueart the City scorers that day against a Newcastle side.  Their unsuccessful appearance happened slap bang in the middle of the two victories, coming in 1974. Again, this was a 2-1 result but on this day the victors were yet another Midlands team, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Fetch the violins: I love football, but have always been crap at it. Whoever at Level-5 is responsible for Inazuma Eleven's concept is, I'd bet, in exactly the same boat: an enthusiast rather than an expert, the first to every match but one of the last to be picked. They know the dull ache of the substitutes' bench, or something like it. Inazuma Eleven isn't just a football game; it's a game about the love of football. And one that's knocking on a bit. It's taken Nintendo over three years to release Inazuma Eleven in the UK, in which time it's not only been available in Japan, America and the rest of Europe, but has had two DS sequels and a Wii spinoff. Its age isn't nearly enough to warn you away from this, but Inazuma Eleven can feel clunky in terms of its menu screens and overall interface, which are aspects the series has since refined. But hey, this is Nintendo Europe, so let's party like it's 2008. You play Mark Evans, a plucky young goalkeeper who's football-mad and the captain of his school team – which, at the start of the game, doesn't even have enough players for a match. The school is the hub for Inazuma Eleven, with most chapters constructed around a single match against a themed opposition team, and another chunk of the story to take you around the world map – a still screen that lets you jump from place to place. These sections of the game are pure RPG and, while Inazuma Eleven has plenty of byways and side streets to be explored, the story's linearity isn't helped by a massive arrow pointing to where you need to go next and the objectives constantly being spoonfed. In Sanchez lies a pair of legs which could shimmy the living daylight out of any defender. Apart from being a direct-approach, fleet-footed player, Sanchez also possesses speed and delivers genuine width from the flanks.

Maybe. A fact? Absolutely. Lionel Messi is football's poster boy at the moment so to speak. He is seen as the humble, shy and unassuming superstar, while Cristiano Ronaldo is seen as an arrogant, egoistical player who's all about himself. Basically, Messi is Good and Ronaldo is Evil. Of course that any person with a bit of critical thinking can easily see that these stereotypes make no sense. Messi surely isn't as perfect as he's portrayed and Ronaldo certainly isn't the devil personified. These assertions are especially ridiculous because we football fans know next to nothing about these two great footballers. But this is their public image, whether we like it or not. Messi is the face of football right now; everybody loves Messi, including the governing bodies. The same can't be said about Ronaldo, whose every move tends to be excessively and unfairly criticized. It's Messi's world; Ronaldo is just living in it. And then we have Xavi, who's no where near as polarizing as Messi and Ronaldo, just a world-class player who does his business without raising any waves. In short, he's not as marketable as Ronaldo or Messi. In the current state of affairs, it's unthinkable that Messi doesn't win this award and the Ballon d'Or. It's just inconceivable that the golden child of football might not lift these awards this year. As the summer transfer winds down, the Red Devils have made a strong push for the Inter Milan star, and have given him a week to decide on his future, and if he does the proper soul searching, he'll realize that Manchester United holds the keys to his future. Inter Milan is a great squad, but Man U is one of the world's best sides, and is coming off of a runner-up performance in the Champions League. The Red Devils are ready to clear room for his arrival by jettisoning Dimitar Berbatov. Per The Daily Star: Transfer speculation has been rife all summer between the Dutch international and the Premier League holders. Inter Milan have held informal talks with Manchester United suggesting the Italian side are prepared to lose their prized asset. Problems may arise over the player’s wages with Sneijder currently enjoying a tax-free wage in Italy that Manchester United won’t be able to match. Making way for Sneijder at Old Trafford, Dimitar Berbatov looks set to leave Manchester and join cash rich Paris Saint-Germain. If you want to reach the greatest height you can as a player, there are few better choices than Manchester United, and Sneijder would be joining a massive influx of talent. Sir Alex Ferguson is building an impressive roster, and adding the Inter Milan star would go a long way towards solidifying the roster. Delivering an ultimatum never goes over well in sports, but time is slipping away and Manchester United needs an answer. It won't be an easy move for Sneijder, but in the end, it is what's best for his career, and you cannot pass up the type exposure he'll get for playing for one of the world's most prominent sides. Ferguson has made it clear he's doing everything in his power to win the Champions League, and that is something Inter Milan isn't in a position to compete in. The Red Devils are one of the transfer window's biggest winners, and if they lock Sneijder up before the end of the week, it will be the cherry on top of the sport's best transfer class. Rubin Kazan have a mountain to climb if they want to reach the group stages of the UEFA Champions League as they lost 3-1 away to Lyon in the first leg of their play-off.
Vladimir Dyadyun gave the Russian side the perfect start, scoring from the corner after just three minutes.But shortly after, Lyon equalized through an unmarked Bafetimbi Gomis and didn’t let the visitors maintain the 1-1 score till the break. Rubin defender Solomon Kverkvelia redirected Gomis’s cross on the 40th minute as the Russian Premier League bronze medalists fell behind. Lyon remained the better side on the pitch after the break and managed to increase their lead after Jimmy Briand headed in a corner to settle the final 3-1 score. ”A two-goal handicap is a serious thing, but nothing is lost yet,” Kurban Berdyev, Rubin’s coach, told Sport-Express newspaper. “There are no pessimistic moods.” Lyon’s manager Remi Garde agreed with his Kazan counterpart that the fate of the two-match tie is to be decided next week on Rubin’s turf. ”There are still 90 minutes remaining,” he said. “And considering that we’ve conceded at home, we’ll need to score an away goal in order to make it into the main tournament. However, today it was already a real Champions League clash.” Elsewhere, Arsenal defeated Udinese 1-0 at the Emirates, despite missing key players and having sold captain Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona.The only goal of the match came from Theo Walcott in the 4th minute. By Chris Wright The relief was almost tangible as Arsenal began life after Cesc with a win last night, beating Udinese 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League play-off at the Emirates thanks to a fourth-minute Theo Walcott goal.
